About UnitConvert
UnitConvert is a free, browser-based project focused on one thing: helping people convert measurements accurately and understand the methods behind the numbers — from a student learning dimensional analysis to a cook adapting an international recipe to an engineer checking a calculation.
Our Mission
Unit conversion looks simple, yet it is one of the most common sources of error in science, engineering, cooking, and trade. The 1999 Mars Climate Orbiter was lost because one team used pound-force seconds and another used newton-seconds — a unit mismatch that cost $327 million. Closer to daily life, a misread gram-to-ounce conversion or a Celsius-to-Fahrenheit mistake in a recipe can ruin a bake. Our mission is to make conversion effortless and to explain, in plain language, the methods that prevent those errors. Every tool and article on this site is built around that goal.
We believe a good unit converter does three things: it uses accurate conversion factors traceable to international standards, it shows the formula behind every result so the user can verify the math, and it respects the user's privacy at every step. We build every page around that loop — convert, understand, and protect.
Methodology
Our converter and reference material follow a consistent methodology:
- Standards-traceable factors. Length, mass, and time conversions are anchored to SI base units as defined by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). Non-SI units (mile, pound, Fahrenheit) are converted through their exact SI equivalents — for example, 1 inch = 25.4 mm exactly, and 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg exactly.
- Formula transparency. Every result displays the conversion formula and the arithmetic that produced it, so users can check the work themselves rather than trusting a black-box number.
- Squared and cubed units. Area and volume conversions apply the conversion factor raised to the correct power — 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m², not 0.3048 m² — and we flag this explicitly because it is the single most common conversion error.
- Temperature handled correctly. Temperature conversions use the proper offset formulas (°F = °C × 9/5 + 32), not a simple multiplier, and we explain why in our temperature conversion article.
- Honest limitations. We label our demo widget as a demo because we want to be clear about what works, what is still in development, and what the browser platform can and cannot guarantee.
